Design
The
point of departure in the plans for the new
instrument will be the case designed by Osmond Fisher, 1817-1913 (right)
and the Bishop pipe work of the present organ at Harlton. Peter Bumstead’s
specification and design will be based on other organs built by Bishop and
Sir John Sutton, so that the final result may be seen simply as a further
example of that particular school of influence; in
other words, a development of what exists already -
the kind of organ which might have been built at the time if they had been
building a larger organ then - rather than anything radically different or
more “modern”.
Layout
Internally the organ will assume the simple
and logical layout of a classical English organ: the Great Organ will be
accommodated at about impost level, with the Swell directly above it; both
will be within the confines of the original case. The Choir will be behind
the Great and at a slightly higher level, with the bellows beneath it. The
largest pedal pipes will be accommodated at the back of the organ on the
gallery floor; the smaller ones will be mounted on two new soundboards
either side of the console, and also on the gallery floor.

The original Fisher case will be restored to its former
glory. It will be supported by a new lower case made from European oak
which will house the re-built organ. This will match the original as
closely as possible. The console, also of oak, has been designed by the
organ builder, Peter Bumstead, to be stylistically appropriate to the
case. The stops are to be arranged in a single column either side of the
keyboards, with square drawstop rods and rosewood knobs of the pattern
characteristic of J C Bishop’s work. The stop labels are to be of a
synthetic material (in the absence of ivory) engraved in Roman lettering.
